Introducing the PiPistrelle version 5.3. A handheld bat detector that offers advanced features for detecting and analysing bat calls up to 384KHz. Capable of Heterodyne and Time Expansion modes, this device preserves the rhythm and harmonic relationships of bat calls without the need for manual tunning! This allows for effortless 'eyes to the skies' operation.
The PiPistrelle stands out from competitors for the "Time Expansion" mode, which slows down bat calls by 16x or 10x, giving users the ability to listen to a slightly different way of hearing bat and small mammal sounds. But don't worry for those who are keen heterodyne users, we still offer this on the default firmware, with simple automatic frequency detection. All this is outputted from a 3.5mm headphone socket, allowing users to listen to bat calls in real-time.
The PiPistrelle features a 10-LED real-time spectrum display, with it indicating the approximate frequency of calling bats in real time, providing valuable indications of species in the field. What's more, users can access more detailed information via frequency speech synthesis, enhancing their understanding of bat communication. This can also output via the 3.5mm headphone port, and adds another level of accessibility to the product.
In this classic version, it also has an SD card port, allowing it to be used as a passive detector, recording triggered 384KHz/16-bit to the SD card in a format perfect to be uploaded to the BTO pipeline. Although not perfect for a passive detector (for that see the PippyG), it is a great way to start experimenting with passive detection.

PiPistrelle - Handheld Bat Detector
Items bought from Smith Robotics Ltd can be returned within 14 days of receipt of shipment in most cases. During this period, you can try the product and examine it just like you would when you buy something in a physical store. The product must be in the same condition that you receive it and undamaged in any way. You are allowed to take the product out of its packaging, unless the packaging is sealed.
If you decide to return the items, you’ll need to let us know by filling in the return form on our website, or using the model withdrawal form below. You may also let us know that you want to return your order by sending an email to: admin@smithrobotics.co.uk
Please note that you must send the items back within 14 days of informing us.
Processing your return
After we receive your return shipment, we will inspect the returned items and start processing your refund. The money will be refunded to the original payment method you’ve used during the purchase, unless you prefer otherwise. The refund will be paid within 14 days. You will have to cover the return shipping costs yourself. The costs will be an estimated maximum of £3.00.

This is a fantastic little device for everyone, including beginners. I was a little daunted at first, but the supplied instructions and info are fantastic and thorough and help show both the simplicity and capability of it. Seeing what this little device is capable of, and all the work that has gone into it's design and manufacture, makes it an absolute bargain. Smith's Robotics have been a pleasure to deal with also.
Great detector for such a price. Instructions of the layout is a single sheet sent with detector and nothing on the website. When you lose the sheet it isn't easy. A dow load able manual would be useful with layout.
